The On-Line DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation
Initial training is designed to meet the requirements for training under 49 CFR 172.704
. The purpose of this course is to ensure awareness and promote safety among
employees who may be involved in the transport of hazardous materials.
This Initial Certification
is valid for 3-years.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all
persons who offer hazardous materials for shipment (including shippers) to
receive training to meet DOT's hazardous materials regulations. These
regulations require shipments of hazardous materials to be safely packaged,
labeled and accompanied with the correct paperwork.
Who Should Be Trained in
Hazmat Transportation?
The DOT Mandates that any person who is involved in the shipment process
(this includes the administrative support personnel that generate paperwork, manifests, bills of
lading, etc) anyone who signs or accepts shipments, anyone who prepares,
packages, labels, transports or handles a hazmat shipment must be trained.
Think About It: The primary reason
DOT mandates this training is to insure that every person who comes in
contact with hazmat or is part of the shipping process receives competent training. Not providing
competent training can jeopardize the shipment (due to mistakes, lack of knowledge or simply
passing on the wrong information to another person in the process). If an employee does not understand DOT
regulations, cannot identify or read hazard classes, uses the wrong packaging,
puts the wrong placard on a container etc. that employee jeopardizes the shipment and every
person throughout the process.
In order to be compliant, you must train:
- Warehouse Personnel (and their managers and supervisors)
- Drivers
- Administrative Personnel
- and anyone else who is involved in the shipment process.
Note: Drivers who transport HAZMAT
shipments should
be trained in 49 CFR 172.704 (this course) as well as maintain a
separate hazmat endorsement for their Commercial Drivers License (CDL). This
training DOES NOT replace or act as a substitute for a driver's CDL Hazmat
Endorsement.
