awareness and promote safety among employees who may be involved in the
transport of hazardous materials. The objective is to ensure that employees
operate in the safest possible manner in situations where contact with
potentially hazardous materials is likely.
At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify the proper shipping methods for hazardous materials in air,
water, and land.
- Recognize information needed on shipping papers for specific types of
hazardous wastes
- Utilize proper labeling, marking, and placarding required for hazardous
waste transportation
- Develop information gathering techniques needed for required incident
reporting and emergency notification
- Show understanding of the documentation for shipping papers and manifests.
Course Overview: The transportation of hazardous
materials and wastes is becoming increasingly difficult with the development of
new products requiring specialized transportation methods. As a result, the
regulations that govern the transportation of hazardous materials are constantly
undergoing improvement. New containment designs and specifications are being
developed daily. Recent technology has provided more efficient methods to ship
goods such as more compacted packaging for non-bulk shipping containers.
The nuclear industry throughout the world has grown with the development of
nuclear power and nuclear pharmaceuticals that provides a better life for
everyone. As a direct result of the use of nuclear technology, we now have
increased the amount of radioactive waste that must be safely transported and
stored.
A combination of all these factors results in more hazardous materials than
ever before on out highways at any given time. Accidents have been few, but
increased awareness by enforcement agencies, news media and the public in the
potential dangers involved in the transportation of hazardous materials has
resulted in safer regulations and citations of carriers for violations of the
regulations.
This Online Course meets DOT requirements for training of personnel engaged
in Hazardous Materials Transportation, including hazardous material handling,
hazardous waste handling, shipping and manifest documents, proper markings,
labels, placards, emergency communication, emergency procedures, and emergency
notification.
This course is intended for individuals who manage hazardous materials in
their job. This includes employees who:
- Prepare hazardous materials' shipping papers and/or manifests;
- Prepare hazardous materials for shipping
- Handle hazardous materials before, during, and after shipment
- Handle containers or packaging containing hazardous materials;
- Are responsible for the safety of hazardous materials; and
